Education

Program: Leadership Clubs

  • Civic education in the democratic context has not been adequately addressed in Armenia, despite the government's considerable efforts to reform the primary and secondary education systems in the aftermath of the collapse of the soviet system.
  • At the same time, there is insufficient funding and lack of teachers trained to teach a civic education curriculum geared to support the democratic model of citizen responsibility and self-governance.

Among the important aspects of a civic education curriculum are essential leadership and social skills, such as:

  1. Decision making
  2. Problem solving
  3. Negotiating
  4. Creative thinking
  5. Critical thinking
  6. Effective communication and proactive listening
  7. Interpersonal relationship skills
  8. Self-awareness
  9. Empathy

  • In other democratic states such skills are often developed on the extracurricular level via student governments, community service opportunities, boy and girl Scouts, special interest clubs, or other programs designed to expose the youth to their own potential to create a more fair and just society through proactive participation.
  • The "Leadership Club" program is designed to cultivate a new generation that will possess the firsthand experience and know how to make positive social and political change on the local, national, and even regional level.
